Morecambe Bay Timescapes Workshop

What’s on offer?

Discover pasts, presents and possible futures of our coast.

This workshop activity will lead you on a guided walk along the river Lune, using kits with prompts to produce speculative visions as annotated maps. Back in the museum we will discuss the speculative visions produced by participants, alongside maps of pasts and also predictive futures.

You can also view the exhibition of interactive artworks about possible coastal futures for Morecambe Bay produced by students from three local secondary schools and one FE college as part of the Timescapes of Morecambe Bay research project:

• Lancaster and Morecambe College,
• Carnforth High School
• Morecambe Bay Academy
• Bay Leadership Academy

 The artworks are displayed alongside historical documents from the Maritime Museum collection as well as maps showing future predictions. You will discover the changes that coastal areas have been undertaking, and engage in speculative thinking about possible futures.  

What’s it about?

This workshop engages the public with research on climate change and coastal futures at the local level. By looking at historical data, conducting direct observations, and exploring future predictions, you'll learn about the ways in which communities have responded to storms, flooding, and coastal change, and produce visions for possible local futures.

Everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition and workshop.  The workshop is designed to be family friendly, with activities suitable for all children 5+ years old, and accessible to all.  The workshop will include a 45 minute walk along the river - please wear appropriate waterproof clothing and footwear.   The route is suitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs.   If you have specific accessibility requirements or have further questions, please contact the organisers: s.pollastri@lancaster.ac.uk (Dr Serena Pollastri).
