Physical activity for autistic young people – why can accessing Physical Education be so difficult?

What’s on offer?

Come and hear about the recent work we have been conducting around understanding the experiences of autistic young people in school, particularly in terms of accessing PE.  There will also be a panel discussion with autistic young people, PE teachers, parents and researchers.

The event is open to all, but will be particularly relevant to autistic people, parents and PE teachers and anyone involved in supporting and delivering the education of autistic pupils.

What’s it about?

This research fits within our broad programme of work that is dedicated to understanding and supporting autistic children and young people at school, especially with issues relating to attention, sensory arousal and anxiety (what we refer to as ‘Triple-A). Our recent research shows how sensory arousal and anxiety can act as barriers to participation in PE at school, but that there are other important things to consider as well.

The talk will be followed by a panel discussion, including a range of interested parties, including autistic young people, PE teachers, parents and researchers.

Who’s leading the event?

Dr Mary Hanley and Professor Debbie Riby, as well as Esther Waddington and Dora Sadler, all of whom have led on the research that provides the basis to this event.
