Imagining Community-Led Housing in the Heart of Sheffield

My local area theme

What’s on offer?

Taking place in the heart of the city centre, the event will consist of a small exhibition, a series of short talks followed by a panel discussion and networking with refreshments before and after the talk.

Speakers will each give a short presentation (10-15 min), followed by a panel discussion about how community led housing might play a part in Sheffield City centre and a Q&A. The talk and panel will run for 90 mins, informal conversations and exploring of the exhibition, with refreshments, will be encouraged before and after the panel discussion.

The exhibition, open throughout the day will showcase ideas on how existing city centre buildings might support sustainable and affordable housing. Part of the exhibition will be interactive and will seek audience’s views on how a community land trust might work and allow them to help shape priorities.

What’s it about?

What could sustainable and affordable city-centre housing look like if it was led by the people who live there? This interactive event explores how community-led housing models (and community land trusts in particular) could work in the centre of Sheffield to both allow for low-carbon retrofit of existing buildings, and the provision of genuinely affordable housing. Our speakers will share their experiences of similar projects and host the public launch of the Sheffield Community Land Trust. Attendees will be able to earn more about the organisation and register interest to join this project.

Who’s leading the event?

Dr Mark Parsons, School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield alongside Professor Cristina Cerulli from Sheffield Hallam University, in collaboration with Sheffield Community Land Trust and social enterprise architecture practice Studio Polpo.
