What’s on offer?

The School of Criminology has partnered with Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre to bring you a series of free film screenings all about crime and justice! Crime has been one of the most popular subjects for film since the birth of cinema. This series shows the links between crime on screen and in practice. Each film in this series of events is introduced by an academic with specific expertise in a related area of criminology. These talks will include how each film represents crime and justice, what this means for the subject, and discuss current research in the area. After the film there will be a Q&A with the opportunity to understand more about crime on screen and how this impacts upon our world.

What’s it about?

If you're interested in crime and justice, thinking of studying criminology, or just want to learn more about how films represent and shape our world please do come along with any questions you have! Film has always been a key way in which we learn about and understand our world, and the talks and films will share how this has impacted upon crime and justice in practice. The talks and Q&As will be with experts in the field who carry out research in areas related to each film.   

Who’s leading the event?

The event is led by Dr Jessica Urwin, a lecturer and researcher focusing on youth justice. Her work considers the services available through criminal justice and the way in which justice-involved young people are viewed in society.  

Each event will have a different academic expert giving a talk and participating in the Q&A.

Open to

All are welcome to attend, but please check the age restrictions on some of the films being shown ( Hot Fuzz is 18+, Four Lions and Good Time are 15+).

Of particular interest to

This event will be of particular interest to young people and adults with an interest in crime, justice, and film.

This film season is running over several evenings (see above).  All events start at 7.00pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and will end by 9.45pm.
